PTA Update Week 19

ENGLISH:
A big thank you to all the students who helped clean up the beach after the Polar Bear plunge this past Sunday! It was wonderful seeing everyone outside on such a nice day! Students worked this week on Super Disasters of the 21st Century, and article in their Expert 21 books. As a culminating activity, we worked collaboratively on a 5-task activity that included determining cause and effect of various natural disasters, reading closely to determine mood of a piece, creating a disaster relief agency, completing a survival kit, and viewing an online video interview of children who survived Hurricane Katrina. The students worked well with their peers and were quite creative in their responses! Next week, they need to hand in their Case Study Projects, which were based on Freak the Mighty. We will also complete the next two selections in Expert 21 and take an Inquiry test based on the first three readings of Workshop 3.


FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES:
Students will continue working in our entrepreneurial unit. They will learn about the risks, costs and benefits of running a business. They will finalize and implement ideas for their business, learn how to write a business plan and calculate profit.


MATHEMATICS: 

All permission slips and deposits for NYC Trip - May 9th are due on Friday February 14th.  Please bring the permission slips in so we can give the Tour Company an ACCURATE Headcount.
Math: Accelerated - We will continue working on Chapter 10.  There is a Unit Exam on Friday February 14th.  Please complete Self-Check Quiz for Chapter 10 on bigideasmath.com website.

Regular - We will continue working on Chapter 6.  There is a Unit Exam on Friday February 14th.  Please complete Self-Check Quiz for Chapter 6 on bigideasmath.com website.


SCIENCE:This week we completed the Digestive System with a unit test and a display sheet project. We read an introductory article to the Respiratory System which we will continue to study in-depth next week. Students will build a simple working model of the Respiratory System and test their lung capacity in science lab.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
We have finish our examination of the first amendment. This week we will complete a walkabout activity on the Bill of Rights and learn about Amendments 2-10. Students will have a quiz on Monday (Amendment 1 + Vocabulary) and Friday (Amendments 2-10)
