ENGLISH:
This past week the students got back their inquiry test scores. We also worked on two selections in the workbook: "Storm in the Night" and "The Big Wave". During the readings we focused on conflict, problem, solution, and setting. In addition, we've taken a more creative turn and begun work on short story writing. Next week, we will complete our Workshop 3. Students will take an X-skills test. This is one in which they will read two selections and answer a series of questions based on the critical reading skills we've been using during class. Please encourage your children to read a little bit every day; these skills cannot be perfected just by working in classes. Rather reading should be a life skill. Interim reports are being completed next week as well. Ask your child if he/she is missing any overdue work.

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE:
Students will continue embarking on their journey of career exploration. They will learn how to use internet resources and Microsoft Publisher to create an informational career brochure and  resume. Homework: Students must interview two people about their careers. The Career Interviews are due March 7, 2014.

MATHEMATICS:
Common assessment #3 will take in Friday March 14th for all classes.
Regular: We are currently working on Chapter 8 and will continue on this chapter next week. Students must practice perimeter, area and circumference.
Accelerated: We are currently working in Chapter 11: Transformations. We spoke about reflections and translations this week. We will continue working on this chapter next week.
SCIENCE:
This week in science, we completed the Respiratory System. A take home quiz was given as an assessment for this body system. Next week, we will begin the Circulatory System which will be the last body system of this unit. Students should anticipate a unit test and culminating project upon completion.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

We just finished reading an except from Cory Doctorov's book, Little Brother. This weekend students will be writing a letter to the government (quiz grade!) explaining the experience of Marcus in the reading, who is picked up after a terrorist attack and detained as a possible enemy combatant. Next week we will be discussing the implications of the PATRIOT Act and our rights under the Bill of Rights. We will read and watch videos on Edward Snowden and then begin to explore the issues our New Nation encountered under George Washington as first President of the United States.
