ENGLISH: (BEHAN, FERRANTE, VETTER)
This week in English class, students applied the knowledge they gained in Workshop 3 to real life scenarios. Students worked on a two day activity that included viewing a video interview of elementary aged students from Hurricane Katrina, a cause/effect analysis chart of natural disasters, and storm preparedness and response activities. We wrapped up the workshop by taking Inquiry 2 on Friday. Students also worked on responding to short and extended responses for a paired reading Students will begin working with a new novel, The Testing, next week. We will complete some reading in class, but students will also be expected to read regularly at home.
FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES: (Stern)
Students did a beautiful job designing, creating, and constructing original pillows. Students mastered hand sewing and work on the sewing machines. Excellent job by all students. Students will begin a the Personal Development unit after Spring Recess I.
FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES: (Berman)
This week in Home & Careers, students analyzed the functions of ingredients when baking and the importance of measuring. They had there first 3 cooking labs where they worked collaboratively to make Pancakes, Blueberry Muffins and Thumbprint Cookies. Next week they will be making Honey Oat Granola and Yogurt Parfaits.
HEALTH: (LEIBOWITZ, GLASSER)
This week in health we discussed stress and how stress relates to health. The students engaged in different activities that identified what stress feels like. They identified the difference between positive stress and negative stress. The students created their own personal stress kits to enable them to use the tools necessary to mange their stress healthy ways. The students also engaged in the "band-aid" activity. This activity challenges the students to not insult or be mean to anyone for 24 hours. They will wear a band-aid on their hand to remind them of their task. This will raise their awareness on how often people insult others and the power of their words.
MATHEMATICS: (FERNANDEZ, REHNBACK, MCWILLIAMS)
Test on Tuesday for ALL classes. Team Day on Wednesday March 23rd. Performance Task is due on March 29th.
SCIENCE: (CAMACHO, KALNER, TOBIA)
This week in science, students completed the Respiratory System. A lung capacity laboratory investigation was conducted this week and lab report was due on Friday 3/18. Part one of the unit exam (multiple choice and reading comprehension) was given on Friday 3/18, part two (constructed response) will be administered on Monday 3/21. The next unit of study will be the Circulatory System, which will conclude How Humans make Energy Unit.
SOCIAL STUDIES: (COOK, HOFFMAN, MARR)
Dr. Marr and Mr. Hoffman have provided Google Classrooms to students. As we prepare to transition to a 1:1 chromebook initiative, many of the homework assignments in the coming weeks will be done on the cloud in Google classroom. Students can access homework from any internet-capable device, including smart phones and tablets. The website is classroom.google.com. Students must log in with the district provided google account, select the class, and open the assignment. Next week we will begin to look at the New Nation under President George Washington. Mr. Cook will be reading Little Brother next week and a class discussion on the Bill of Rights will conclude the week.
