We will be finishing our folders this week. Be looking for a rubric with their first two grades on it. Please sign the rubric just as you would a test and send back to me for two points on their grade. Any one who is falling behind needs to stay for extra help, Tues. or Thurs. , thank you, Mrs. Knoop.ENGLISH:
It was a pleasure to see so many parents at Back to School Night. Thank you for taking time to join us! This past week, we took our SRI assessment. We also worked on our first readings in the Expert 21 book. Next week, we will work on "The Road Not Taken", continue our exploration of characterization and conflict, and take our first inquiry test on Thursday. This will cover the first three readings in the workshop, and will be an open-book test. As a reminder, our first independent reading assignment is due October 16th. Please encourage your children to keep up with the reading. We don't want anyone to find themselves pressed for time a few days before the due date!MATHEMATICS:
It was so nice meeting all of you on Wednesday night. I know that we are going to have a GREAT year in math together! Accelerated had their first Unit Exam on Thursday, which will be returned next week. We will begin Chapter 3 - Expressions and Equations on Monday. They will have their 3rd Spiral Review Quiz on Monday during the first few minutes of class. The Math 7 students will take their first Chapter Test on Integers on Tuesday. I recommend that each student tries the Self Check Quiz online at www.bigideasmath.com this weekend; so, we can clear up any confusion during the Chapter Review on Monday. After Integers, we will begin Chapter 2 - Rational Numbers on Wednesday. Have a wonderful weekend.
SCIENCE:
I would like to begin by saying, how wonderful it was to
meet all the parents this week at Back to School Night! For parents who were
unable to attend, materials from the evening were backpacked home with your
child for you. This week in science,
students completed the study of Life Functions/Characteristics of Life. Next
week, we will begin our unit on the Scientific Method. This is a precursor and
preparation to ready our students for this year’s Science Symposium which will
take place on Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Science Symposium is an inquiry based
project. Students will learn the
scientific method, which they will follow to conduct a scientific experiment.
This year, students will have the option of working independently, with a partner,
or in a triad. All science classes will
visit the library several times where they will learn how to research for their
experiment and choose a topic. The topic must be approved by me before they
begin. They must also get approval from you prior to experimentation. The
actual experiment must be completed at home, as well as the display board.
Informational paperwork will be sent home with guidelines, benchmark due dates,
and grading rubrics. I am extremely excited to begin this scientific journey with
your children. Stay tuned for updates!
