PTA Update- September 16

Mrs. Kalner- Science - Teams: 7-2 & 7-3
Welcome back to the 2016-2017 school year.  I am very excited to start this new school year with your children. Everyone seems to have settled into their new schedules and team very nicely.  This week in science, students completed the first lab activity, “Saving Sam”.  Students were broken up into groups of three or four and given a challenge that required every member of the group to: communicate, collaborate, plan, and work together as a team to achieve the common goal to “Save Sam”. They used problem solving skills and had to think “outside of the box” to be successful. After writing a reflective piece, most students were able to explain the importance of the skills they utilized in this activity. The first lab report was due, Wednesday, September 14. Requirements of a lab report were covered in detail. This format will be followed for every lab report completed this year.  We also explored the various biological sciences culminating with a quiz given on Friday, September 16, and the first “choice“ project  due Wednesday, September 14. Students chose a Biological Science studied in a class or one researched on their own.  They had to choose of how they wanted to present their information. Some of the choices were (but not limited to): poem, PowerPoint slide, model, playbill, or poster. A project sheet was given on Thursday, September 8 which outlined in detail, the requirements of the project. Next week, we will begin the study of, the characteristics of life.  On a personal note, it was a pleasure to meet so many parents at Back to School night. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to come. If you weren’t able to make it on Thursday evening, please do not worry! You may contact me via email (mkalner@lbeach.org) or phone anytime if you have specific questions. Have a Great Weekend!

Dr. Marr- Social Studies
This week we began our first unit entitled, "All About Me." Students must submit a digital timeline by this Sunday. All information is available on Google classroom. Next week students will be exploring how geography influences everyone and we will end the week looking at the upcoming September elections.

Mrs. McWilliams- Math
Welcome back to school! It was so nice meeting you last night at Back to School Night.  We had our first quiz on Thursday, they were handed back today.  The first Performance Task was handed out today and is due next Friday.  Next week we will continue working with Integers.  The first Unit Exam will be on September 30th.  Have a great weekend!!

Mrs Vetter- English
Welcome back! In English this week, we accomplished many tasks. We went to the library to get novels for our first quarter independent reading assignment. The assignment was distributed to all students and is posted in my Google classroom. We also thought about moving forward with our English class goals and wrote paragraphs about that. In addition, we reviewed some parts of speech and sentence structure tips. Next week, we will continue reading our novels, and we will also be distributing the Themes anthology, which will be a major resource for the class this year. Please remind your children to keep up with their work and read a little bit every night!
