ENGLISH:
In English this past week, we have completed the first section of the novel The Hunger Games. The students have started to analyze characters' actions and motivations through their reading and writing. We have also discussed the conflicts' development. They were assigned their first of three RAFT assignments, which involves writing from the point of view of a character, choosing an audience, a topic, and a format for their writing. Each RAFT is assigned near the end of a section and their options change with each task. This has been explained to them. We have also continued working in our review booklets to strengthen our critical reading skills. Next week, we will continue to focus on the development of the conflicts in the novel, as well as review our writing in response to paired readings. There will be a reading quiz on Monday for Chapters 12-14. Students should continue to complete their homework and assignments in a timely manner. As a reminder, the NYS ELA begins on April 1, 2014 and continues through April 3, 2014.
FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE: This week students reviewed and practiced hand stitching techniques. They also learned how to thread and safely operate a sewing machine.
MATHEMATICS:
All students received a Blue Review Book this week. We will have homework every night in this book. Please make sure your child is working on these problems. I ask them to attempt each problem and show work.
Accelerated: We started Chapter 13-Graphing and Writing Linear Equations. Next week we will begin having Spiral Review Quizzes as a do-now activity.
Regular: We started Chapter 10-Probability yesterday. Next week we will begin having Spiral Review Quizzes as a do-now activity.
SCIENCE:
This past week we conducted a comparative anatomy project where we dissected a frog. Most students enjoyed their experience and were able to see the similarities between human anatomy and other organisms. The next unit is our Regulation Unit where we discuss how the Nervous and Endocrine System work together to maintain homeostasis. This will conclude our body systems for the year.
The culminating project for the Respiratory, Circulatory and Digestive Systems is due Monday, March 24. This project is in lieu of a unit test. It will count as a unit test grade. Projects should represent each student's best work. The assignment sheet has been posted on www.72.co
SOCIAL STUDIES:
