ART: You should have recieved the interim report. Please speak with your child about behavior in class. Too much talking means less time on task. Students will be finishing their watercolor paintings of their cartoon character. Mrs. Knoop

ENGLISH:

Over this past week, we took an Inquiry test for the first half of the workshop. Students should get the tests back on Monday. Students also had returned to them their scrapbooks. Attached to the scrapbook was a rubric with their scores - these needed to be signed and returned to me. We have also read "Raymond's Run", a story about a girls' passion for running. Work is being completed towards finalizing requirements for the Independent Reading Assignment (an essay based on the theme of the novel they are reading). Students have been completing bookmarks for characterization, conflict, and theme, as well as handouts to help them with formatting, revision, and editing. This essay id due on Tuesday, December 17th. By now, they should be finished, or nearing completion of the reading so they can spend a couple of days at home writing the essay. Over the course of next week, we will also finish the second half of Workshop Two and have our second Inquiry test on Friday. As a reminder, these are open-book assessments used for the purpose of finding and analyzing text. No memorization is necessary. Students have already read the material.

MATHEMATICS:
Accelerated - We are working on Chapter 7.  We will continue on Chapter 7 next week and begin Chapter 8.  There is A Unit Exam next Friday December 20th.  Please make use of the Quiz on the textbook's website bigideasmath.com  for Chapters 7 and try Chapter 8.

Now that we are immersed in the experimental phase, many students have been faced with unforeseen obstacles. They are trouble shooting and problem solving to overcome these “bumps” in the road. The road traveled is often much more important than the destination

SOCIAL STUDIES:
We will be finishing the American Revolution and begin working on an inter-team ABC Project. The project will be posted on the team website and students will have until after Science Fair is over. Please speak with your child about completing all dear jack assignments and completing homework.

ENGLISH:

This past week we have continued with Workshop 2 in our Expert 21 books. We read "Casey at the Bat", "The Cost of Winning", and "Boiling Sports Controversies". We will have our first Inquiry test for the quarter on Tuesday the 10th. The test will be based on the three selections. Afterward, we will read "Raymond's Run". While we work within the workbook, students continue to read their second independent reading novel, completing various interactive bookmarks as they read. When they complete the reading, they will write an essay detailing the theme of the novel. The assignment was distributed before Thanksgiving break and sent home for parents to read about as well. The  essay is due Tuesday, December 17th. As always, encourage your child to keep up with the reading. I would also ask that you explain to your child the importance of revising, editing and proofreading all written work. Too many students are handing in assignments that appear quickly written and carelessly thought out. The work would be greatly improved if a little more time and effort were taken to complete any task (this applies to other subjects as well, not just English class).

Accelerated: There was a test this Friday on everything up to the beginning of Chapter 7.  We will continue on Chapter 7 next week.  Students should continue to access the online website bigideasmath.com

A quiz on plant and animal cells (organelles, structure and function and lab activity) will take place next Tuesday, November 26. Science Symposium deadlines are coming due quickly! The research paper and work cited page was extended to Tuesday, November 19. Hypothesis and materials were due Thursday, November 21, 2013 (handwritten was acceptable).  The next deadline is Tuesday, November 26: Problem, Hypothesis, Materials and Procedure must be typed and printed to be handed in. 7th grade science students will be going to the library on Monday, November 25 specifically for typing these components. I have asked all students come prepared with a handwritten copy of their problem, hypothesis, materials and detailed procedures, to ensure maximum productivity of this library/computer time.  Science Research Club has been meeting on Wednesdays in room 120 to assist all students with science symposium projects. If a student has an interest in competing in local science competitions, this club is an extra resource or support for students. Colonial Day will be celebrated all of team 7-2’s -team classes next Wednesday. Science classes will explore colonial medicine and apothecary.

We will also visit the library to search for a new novel to read for our next independent assignment. As this week was the start of the new quarter, students have been reminded that we start fresh, but that expectations are high. Please encourage your children to read daily and to complete their assignments in a timely fashion. As a reminder, extra help for English is held on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The format being used has been uploaded to each student’s Google Drive for reference.   LBMS has a science research club that typically meets on Wednesdays in room 120. This club is designed to provide support to students who are interested in possibly competing in science competitions following our own Science Symposium. A quiz on the microscope was given this week and we are moving forward into an in-depth study of the cell.
