ART:
Students are bringing home a rubric for their grade on the cartoon character. This week we worked on the color wheel. The students really enjoyed mixing paint.  Next week students will learn how to draw the face.

ENGLISH:
Welcome back! I hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful vacation. This past week in English class, we culminated our Workshop Two with The Perfect Game, an uplifting story about a group of little leaguers from Mexico who strive to achieve their dream of attending the championships in the USA. We've also begun our next unit, which will include reading the novel Freak the Mighty, a story about two boys who are misfits and who become steadfast friends, learning something about themselves along the way. Students have had returned to them the inquiry tests that were given on Friday, December 20th. On Monday, they will also receive their scores for the independent reading assignment which was due before the break. Over the course of the rest of next week, we will analyze characterization and conflict as we read the novel through a variety of activities both in class and out.

MATHEMATICS:

I hope that everyone had a nice and relaxing vacation.  Common Assessment # 2 will be on Friday January 24th.  students should receive a little each night.  The exam is cumulative.  Students are responsible for all material from the beginning of the year until now.  I look forward to speaking with you at Parent Teacher Conferences.

Accelerated: We are working on Chapter 9 - Surface Area and Volume.

Regular: We are continuing with Chapter 5.  This week we spoke about finding slope and direct variation.

SCIENCE:
Happy New Year and welcome back.  We have started a new unit which will encompass three human body systems: the Digestive System, the Respiratory system, and the Circulatory system.  Students will receive packets with notes for each body system as they are covered.  It is important that students come prepared with materials they need on a daily basis.  If a student is absent, they can refer to the packets for basic notes and readings missed.
Science Symposium projects and completed boards are due Friday January 17th.  Parents and family are invited to view the projects on the evening of the 28th.  Students interested in being considered to possibly participate in the Long Island Science Congress should attend next Wednesday's (1/15) Science Research Club meeting in room 120.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Welcome back. Next week we will continue our study of American government. We will be looking at the fundamental principles of government, and how these are expressed in different literature.
